We ate some amazing, cheap street food in Istanbul. Below are some highlights.
Kokerec
If you are a little squeamish with offal, then this isn’t for you. But it tastes amazing. We ate it several times, maybe every day…
Fish sandwich
Around the Galatica bridge there are a lot of people selling fish sandwiches but the best one we had was from these boys on the Galatica side down by the fish market.
Cig Köfte
This is a vegetarian köfte that is made of Bulgar wheat and spices massaged into a paste eaten in a wrap with lettuce, mint, parsley, pomegranate and chilli sauces. This guy is known as the best and roams the back streets near the ferry terminal in the Galatica side. See main photo.
Turkish Ice cream – Dondurma
Ice cream with theatrics. Bit more expensive than your average ice cream, but great fun and amazingly creamy but a little chewey…

Ice cream in the pot, in the air, in the face, on the cone, in the hand, oh not quite, back in the face…
(As can be seen from the photos, Rob had to do all the eating while Julie had to focus on the photos)
Special thanks to Istanbul Foods for their great recommendations. We ate at almost all their suggestions and they were all delicious.
mm did they have Turkish Delight ice cream as good as Oxford Robboy?? must admit that one still really sticks in my mind some great images 😀
